So the first 3 beastie boys albums sound very different from eachother. They started as a punk band they played instruments. They had more members too. One of them was room mates with rick rubin as def jam was being put together. The clubs they hung out at was like punk on Tuesday and the early hip hop on Wednesday kinda stuff so they were hanging out at the same places and were naturally in the hip hop scene. They made thier first hip hop album on def jam with rick rubin producing using classic hard rock to make the beats. That is where no sleep till Brooklyn and fight for your right to party came from. Second album they rented a mansion in los Angeles and left def jam did a sample crazy album that wasnt truly appreciated until years later. It is fantastic. This is thier third album they took the investment from the label to make thier own studio and they picked thier instruments back up. A lot of the parts they rap come from stuff they play and cut up for beats they keep doing similar stuff the rest of thier career
